Moshi Voice Control user reviews RSS 2.0

Hello Moshi

Bob (28.07.2010 02:09:40)
Now that I've owned a Moshi clock for about two months, I'm feeling more positive about it than when I wrote my original review.

I've learned to speak to it with an American accent that it usually understands, and I've found that it doesn't matter very much that the display isn't readable (using the night light in the dark) at eye level. This is because it's easier to simply ask the clock to say the time while keeping my eyes closed.

It's vastly easier and faster to set the alarm time with voice control, than fighting with little buttons. Also it's nice to be able to get the time, date, alarm time and temperature just by asking the clock to say them. It also gives that information when you stop the alarm.

I've found I can handle alarm sounds 1 & 2, and it's only the horrible number 3 bell sound which can shock you out of a deep sleep in a matter of milliseconds. It would be great if the sleep sounds went for much longer than 5 minutes.

The Moshi clock has a lot of good points and now that I've gotten used to it, I recommend it.

Moshi voice control talking clock

The first thing is, this gadget is designed for the American market and an Australian voice can get it very confused. For example, if you're trying to set the time and you say 'ten' or 'thirty', it's likely to think you said 'two' or 'thirteen' respectively.

However, If you speak in a Texan drawl like Slim PIckens did in the movie 'Dr Strangelove', Moshi is much more likely to understand what you mean. On the plus side, it usually understands simple spoken commands like 'night light' and 'sleep sound'.

Another annoyance is that if you're not looking down on the clock, its display is unreadable. If you're planning to put it next to your bed on the same level as your eyes, forget it unless you aren't interested in reading the time and only hearing it.

As other people have commented, the alarm sounds are horrible and the sleep sounds only go for 5 minutes.

It's a fun gadget to play with and certainly a good talking point (accidental pun), but it needs more refinement.
