But are people that rclecye really more "evolved" or just following a trend blindly just like people have done though out history? Take for instances my pet peeve, recycling paper and conservation of wood. The chemicals used to rclecye paper are very dangerous and many recycling plants get a pass from the government on hazardous waste requirements because they are subsidized by the government. Which brings up the point that it isn't economically efficient to rclecye or the government wouldn't have to subsidize the industry. Add in the fact that most pro-recycling groups don't want people to think about, wood IS a renewable resource. Thousands of acres here in Georgia are dedicated to tree farms, the recycling craze but a lot of people out of work and many businesses have had to close. The land is too acidic to grow much other than pine trees, so it's not like it could affordably be turned into farm land. Simply put, if you think we should rclecye paper to save the trees, then we should boycott McDonalds to save the potatoes, because one is about as endangered as the other. And the other rationale I continually hear at the tree huggers rallies, "they are deforesting the Amazon, so we have to rclecye paper to save our oxygen supply". I had a nice little talk with the local BOE on this one after they tried scaring my grade school kids with it. Firstly, 70% to 80% of the oxygen produced naturally is produced by algae in the oceans, not by the Amazon rain forest. Secondly, the deforestation is to expand the Brazilian infrastructure, not to produce wood products, most of the wood from the clear cutting is chipped and burnt on the spot because it would cost too much to haul a lot of the twisted wood out, and the straight wood is used in Brazil mostly, not for paper. I would love to see the deforestation stop, but don't think that recycling paper will have any effect on it. Of course when you tell these people that they need to go to Brazil and protest they suddenly don't care as much because that would mean leaving their nice comfortable WOOD structured homes and roughing it in the forest. And don't even get me started on plastic vs glass .
